Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any other questions which have not been answered here, please email them to me and I will do my best to answer them for you.

1. Why get organized?

  • Relief from stress due to not being able to find things and/or tripping over stuff.
  • Money savings from not over-purchasing because you can't find it.
  • Higher productivity in the space because everything is at your fingertips.

2. How long will it take to get organized?

It depends on your goals, the size of the job, your level of difficulty in making decisions about your possessions, whether you are generally organized already (or not), how much assistance you need to accomplish your goals for getting organized and your budget.

3. What makes you qualified to be a Professional Organizer?

From age 13-16 I baked and sold my goods. I learned the importance of work flow and accessibility at that time since the kitchen was very small but I did not have a name for what I was doing.

In 1974 I was introduced to "work simplification". Another way to put it is "work flow". It’s a simple, common sense idea that most people don’t think about as they go about their day but it is very powerful for lessening stress in recurring tasks & making you more productive. I have used this idea, daily, since then.

Every job I have ever had has been in customer service and I have always given 110% in those positions. How many times did you ask for a coke and the "order taker" gave you the largest size they have? I usually had to back out those charges so I stopped doing that pretty quick!

Over the last 21 years, I have personally installed extra shelving in almost every closet I have ever owned.

Also, I am constantly reading new material in the field and updating myself on the latest products.

4. Are you certified as a Professional Organizer?

Not at this time. It takes up to 3 years and 1500 hours of direct work experience to obtain certification and a very minor part of those hours can be substituted with standard training (lectures & testing). For more information visit www.napo.net/index.html.

5. Do you have a specialty?

I specialize in the creative use of inexpensive and recycled items (for storage) while supplying you with the best possible solution to your storage/organization issue. Organizing is not about purchasing see-through storage boxes.

Since, daily, I am confronted with handicap issues (one handed), I also spend a fair amount of time coming up with solutions to overcome this handicap (both organizational & functional).

6. How do I know you will be able to help me?

An initial consultation will determine whether I can help you. I will ask you several questions to evaluate whether the job you need done is within the scope of what I do. This will give YOU a feel for whether we are compatible, also. It is very important that we feel comfortable with each other.

7. Is it possible to be messy but organized?

Definitely! Most people fall into the category of tossing things aside all week then "cleaning up" on the weekend when they have more time and energy. It is not a problem unless it bothers you or impedes your functionality.

8. I know what I have to do. I just think it's way too boring.

This is a good reason to hire an organizer. We may be able to craft a solution for you to make the maintenance less of a chore. Ask yourself, "How much time do I waste looking for something instead of doing what I really want to do?"

9. I'd like to be more organized, but I don't want it to stifle my creativity.

Let’s use your creativity to create just the right solution for you! Organization solutions do not come in a box labeled "One Size Fits All". Each solution is customized to the individual. Getting organized will give you more time to be creative because you will be able to find the things you need for that creative activity.

10. I want help to get organized, but I'm too embarrassed to let anyone see the mess.

You are not alone. We all hang onto things way longer than we should and continue to have difficulty letting them go even when an organizer comes in to help. It is normal. The mess comes when what we hang onto is more than what we have space for.

You’re ready to straighten it out NOW, so let me help you get over this mole hill, straighten things out and get on with the next phase of your life!

My clients are very important to me so everything about them is held in strict confidence.

11. Will you make me get rid of all my stuff?

No! Organization is NOT about throwing things away. It is about determining what is important to you (in each area you want organized) and making it accessible.

12. Do I need to be there during the organizing sessions?

Yes. Successful organization requires custom solutions designed for whomever will be using them. For the solution to work for you, I must have your input.

13. Will you transform my home like on those TV shows?

No. Much more than you know goes into making those shows. Unless you have the budget those people do, this is not a realistic expectation.

14. How do you help people with time management?

We will look at and evaluate how you spend your time now, how you would like to spend your time, what method you use for staying on track then develop a customized plan to get you to where you want to be.

15. I'm concerned about costs.

My rates are very competitive. All products and/or services will be pre-approved by you. Organizing is NOT about buying see-through boxes and decorating your home.

16. Shouldn't I be able to do this myself?

You may or may not. The question you must ask yourself is, "Do I want to do this myself?" Many people pay for housekeeping, lawn maintenance, personal training, financial planning and a whole host of other services they could do on their own but choose not to. Organizing services are no different. Being a perfectionist may be holding you back, too.

18. Do you do housecleaning?

No. During an organizing activity, we (you and I) will wipe up dust and such that has not been accessible for cleaning before but all thorough cleaning must be done by the client.

19. Will you be installing shelving units in my home or office?

Not if I must make holes in your wall to do it. I will be helping you to evaluate what you need to make your space function for you. I may direct you in how to install shelving yourself and help you with the lifting but, ultimately, the job is yours and the liabilities of drilling into your walls, as well.

It's all about Function and Accessibility!!
